Many American painters of the 19th century traveled to Europe for their inspiration and learning. Artists such as Mary Cassatt, Edmund Tarbell and Frank W. Benson looked to the French Impressionists while others such as John Singer Sargent and Severin Roesen followed the more traditional subject matters.
